Guavatá sports
complex before. . . | Since ancient
Greek and Roman times, sports and athletic events have been a
uniting force within our communities. Evoking a sense of
camaraderie, passion, and enthusiasm among participants and
spectators alike, bonds formed by sports are like those formed among
family. Unfortunately many impoverished towns throughout Central and
South America do not have the economic means to build or maintain
athletic facilities.
In 2003, Atlantic
(USA), Inc. made a financial contribution to the town of
Guavatá, Colombia, and in conjunction with the Federación Nacional
de Cafeteros de Colombia (FNC), helped assist in the repair and
remodeling of the community’s sports complex.

What was once a ramshackle
center is now a recreational facility that can be used by the entire
town. The existing bleachers have been restored and repainted. A
drainage system now extends around the perimeter of the complex.
Additional stands, along with weather-protecting roofing, have been
added. The previously cracked concrete playing field is now a level
surface with freshly painted lines to accommodate a variety of
sports.
Through the cooperative efforts of Atlantic
(USA), the FNC, and the coffee community of Santander, the
Guavatán community now lives in a more positive, healthy, and
dynamic environment.
