Nicaragua is considered to have excellent potential as a cocoa producing country. In 2011, Exportadora Atlantic was approached by many international development organizations interested in helping farmers renovate old farms and plant new area with cocoa. In collaboration, Atlantic is developing initiatives in various regions throughout the country with over 2,500 cocoa farmers covering more than 3,000 hectares in the planting and renovation of cocoa farms. In addition, each project includes a technical assistance component emphasizing the training of farmers in good agricultural practices, renovation or new planting best practices and certification. In collaboration with 4 other organizations, the Atlantic projects expect to reach more than 5,000 beneficiaries – directly impacting their family income.
