In June 2021, ECOM signed up to the Science Based Target Initiative and pledged to become Net Zero by 2050. To achieve this goal, ECOM will be providing climate services to help reach greenhouse gas targets, as part of its own decarbonization journey.
ECOM has launched a new platform called Caring for Climate Services for customers. Building on the experience in coffee, cotton and cocoa, this platform has the ambition to host greenhouse gas removal and reduction initiatives for any supply chain within and outside of ECOM’s upstream scope 3 emissions. Projects will also be focused at farm level in coffee, cocoa, cotton and other commodities sourcing landscapes.
Reduction projects aim to shrink the greenhouse gas footprint of the raw materials ECOM is sourcing and includes practices such as switching to renewable energy within primary processing, organic fertiliser usage, and better irrigation or waste management. Removal projects aim to remove carbon from the atmosphere, such as agroforestry or reforestation projects, and sequester it into biomass and soil. ECOM operates its own nurseries to grow and provide climate resilient and higher yielding plants. To date, ECOM has distributed in excess of 150 million coffee and cocoa trees.
As seen with the recent COP26 event, corporations are increasingly setting ambitious targets to help limit global warming to 1.5°C and Caring for Climate Services will help them meet these targets.
ECOM is in a unique position as an integrated company to have a positive environmental and social impact along the supply chain. This is why ECOM has set out to provide these services. It is now in a position to support customers with strategic climate projects within their own value-chain and to provide the know-how and execution to deliver reductions towards their corporate targets.
By doing this, ECOM is leveraging off the Sustainable Management Services (SMS) climate and project implementation expertise, in order to develop and deploy climate projects for ECOM and its customers.
This is an exciting time as ECOM expands its services as a company, while also doing what is right and urgent. We are adding on a layer of value to the commodities that we trade, from quality, sustainability certifications and now climate benefits.
